# NYIC Report Reveals Holes in Translation Services for NYC Schools

**"Nearly half of New York City public school students speak a language other than English at home, and more than 180 languages are represented. "**
The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) released a report on Tuesday, June 16th, documenting the "major gaps in access to translation and interpretation services" for the parents of children in New York City schools. This not only prohibits parents from being able to engage in their children's education, but also results in misinformation, and child-mediated translations, which are banned by the Department of Education (DOE). A large number of parents don't even realize that these services should be available to them.
