Background

The UCLA Geffen School of Medicine is ranked as one of the top 10 medical schools in the U.S. The school, which has a highly competitive application process, enrolls roughly 700 full-time students per year (out of approximately 14,500 applications received in the 2019 academic year), lending itself to an above-average student-faculty ratio of 3.8:1. Students in the program additionally train at one of 12 affiliated hospitals in the L.A. area to gain practical clinical skills.

Challenge

With a population that is becoming increasingly linguistically and culturally diverse, it is critical that academic institutions provide their scholars with the support and tools necessary to work effectively with language-minority patients. Specifically, during the COVID-19 pandemic, culturally competent care takes on even greater importance.

Although 41 million U.S. citizens are native Spanish speakers, few medical education institutions throughout the country offer specific medical Spanish courses. Of those that do, the offerings are minimal, and, as a result, the expectations of healthcare facilities seeking to hire medical professionals are strikingly low. In fact, there is no concrete, universal, and standardized bilingual language proficiency measure for incoming healthcare employees.

As a top-10 medical school in the nation with a mission “to heal humankind by delivering leading-edge research, education, patient care, and community engagement,” UCLA aspires to offer the best of four tiers that closely parallel those of Canopy. A significant portion of that aspiration involves equipping its medical students and affiliates with the education necessary to serve Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patient populations.

Solution

The school functions as one of the pioneering medical institutions with a robust Medical Spanish curriculum; to augment it, the university has chosen to partner with Canopy to give students an even more robust, autonomous, and flexible educational tool to supplement their language learning.

Learn More About CanopyLearn Medical Spanish

Since 2013, Canopy Innovations, Inc. has partnered with an L.A.-based university’s medical students, alumni network, and affiliate hospitals, offering up to 12 months of Canopy Learn Medical Spanish course access per learner to provide current and future healthcare professionals with the language tools needed to provide patients of Spanish language backgrounds with optimal care.

Additionally, the university’s strong sense of social responsibility and values of diversity and inclusion, in association with the surrounding community and greater patient population, serves as a fundamental basis for its partnership with Canopy.

Canopy’s self-paced Medical Spanish courses provide a flexible learning option for busy medical students while equipping them with the linguistic knowledge and skills necessary to serve the Spanish-speaking patient populations in L.A. County - an area that is marked by its native Spanish-speaking citizens and other areas across the country.

A number of students and affiliates have referenced the application’s easy-to-use platform, providing users with “bite-sized” lessons that are quickly digested and effective.

An anonymous first-year medical student at the university enjoys the integrated lessons CanopyLearn has to offer, including a combination of text and media.

This university acquired an unlimited group license, which does not limit the total number of learners to be enrolled per year within the set cost paid upfront, thus maximizing the return on the investment (ROI). Along with the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 and growing numbers of confirmed coronavirus patients, the university’s students and alumni have quickly adapted to the transformation in healthcare, education, and daily life. An influx of new learners have self-enrolled themselves into the CanopyLearn platform since March, using it as a tool to learn medical Spanish or refresh their medical Spanish vocabulary at home while practicing social-distancing.
