Here at Canopy, we’ve assembled an amazingly talented and mission-driven team united to end the language barrier in healthcare. The Team Member Spotlight series will feature the Canopy teammates one by one to give you a behind-the-scenes look at who we are, and how each one of us contributes in our own special way to the Canopy mission. Enjoy!

Bridget Keller, RN

Job title: Senior Account Executive, Clinical Integration Analyst

Lives in: Fort Worth, Texas

Education / Professional Experience: I attended the University of Tennessee where I earned my BSN  and went on to work as a labor and delivery registered nurse at a Level IV Maternal Designation hospital in Dallas, TX. I joined Canopy with the experience gained working directly with limited-English proficient patients, and I am proud to now cultivate and foster connections within the healthcare community to deliver personalized language access solutions.

Favorite Book: The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Hobbies: My husband and I bought a fixer-upper last year, so the majority of my weekends are taken up by DIY house renovations! We don’t always know what we are doing, but we figure it out along the way. I also love hiking, kayaking, and trying out new local restaurants.

Interesting fact about you: I love learning new things – whether it's crocheting, DIY projects, new baking recipes, or diving into new languages. I'm always excited to try new things and see what I can learn along the way.

What brought you to Canopy?

While working as an L&D nurse, the level of care provided required a lot of trust between the patient and provider, and language-discordant care dampened that rapport. Canopy offers solutions to the gaps the language barrier creates, so joining the team has made me feel like I can make a real difference in what once hindered the care I provided, and to the health outcomes of the growing population of limited English proficient patients today.

What’s the best part about working with healthcare professionals?

The best part of working with healthcare professionals is being immersed in a community whose common mission is to help people. This unifying factor allows for a basis of understanding regardless of the challenges faced in the healthcare system today.

MVIMG_20181013_143708Since joining Canopy, what have you learned about the language access problem that you didn’t know before? Challenges? Opportunities?

Throughout my experience in healthcare, the only language access tools I utilized were virtual interpreters. While these are an amazing resource, they were not always accessible leading us to use other less-than-ideal alternatives such as online translation or a family member. Upon joining Canopy, I learned more about language access policy in healthcare and how language-concordant care can impact patient outcomes. There is ample opportunity for today’s healthcare to improve the care for our LEP patient population, and I am excited to be a part of that change.

What other volunteer work or causes do you participate in?

I volunteered at a local pregnancy resource center providing free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STI testing, and baskets of baby supplies for mothers in need. Having just moved, I am excited to look for opportunities in my new local community!
